Person-Centered Home
Having nine years experience registered with Eden Alternative, we continue to operate using those same values but independently with Resident First Person-Centered Care which means that the way we treat Residents is the way we would a friend or beloved family member.
Welcome to Kumeu Village
Nestled in the heart of Kumeu wine country, overlooking Kumeu River Winery and surrounded by picturesque grounds, Kumeu Village is a rest home with a difference. We don’t just care for our residents – we’re on a mission to provide a true home, rich with experiences and companionship. Kumeu Village is a vibrant community where our residents can live active and varied lives with autonomy and dignity.
For nine years, we have embraced The Eden Alternative® Philosophy, successfully implementing its values and principles of care. Now proudly independent, we continue to utilise the combined wealth of knowledge gained over the years to uphold Kumeu Village’s ‘Resident First’ principles, enhancing our resident-focused environment.
As a ‘Resident First’ facility, we are dedicated to setting a new benchmark in elderly care by prioritising the well-being and satisfaction of our residents above all else.
About Us
With a Resident First Person-Centered approach to resident care mirrors how we would treat a cherished friend or family member. We understand the significance of addressing not only physical ailments but also nurturing the emotional well-being of our residents. In our resident community, we foster an environment where new ideas, acts of kindness, and thoughtful gestures are encouraged and embraced. Our goal is to create a home where loneliness, helplessness, and boredom are actively eliminated from our residents’ daily experiences.
Together, we journey through life, enhancing its value for both residents and the dedicated staff providing care. At the heart of ‘Residents First’ is a focus on the residents themselves: their interests, needs, and preferences are paramount in all that we do.
• At Kumeu Village, we recognise that loneliness, helplessness, and boredom are significant sources of distress for our residents.
• In our community, we prioritise creating a nurturing environment where residents can engage with plants, animals, and children.
• These relationships enrich lives and foster a sense of purpose.
• We believe that loving companionship is essential for combating loneliness. Residents should have regular access to human and animal companions.
• Our community empowers residents to both give and receive care, fostering a sense of purpose and independence.
• Variety and spontaneity are key elements of daily life in our community.
We cultivate an environment where unexpected interactions and events can occur, combating boredom.
• Meaningful activities are vital for maintaining the human spirit. We aim to promote opportunities for residents to engage in activities that hold personal significance.
• We believe in empowering residents and their loved ones by granting them maximum decision-making authority wherever possible.
• Building our ‘Residents First’ community is an ongoing journey.
We encourage and welcome our residents’ family members to join us in this journey to enrich the lives of their loved ones.

Love the decor, has the retro type outlook of an old house inside. Always smells pleasant and the staff are caring
VERY CLEAN AND BRIGHT. We visited our dear friend and were impressed by how nice the facility was laid out and how lovely and modern it was. The staff are friendly and helpful. I would be very happy to have any family member stay there to be cared for including myself in future years.
Top notch I'd live here. Nice to see aged people well cared for. Was like an upmarket lodge. Inspirational care allowing dogs fantastic!!! There are so many places that could learn from this wonderful place. Well done Kumeu Village Rest Home!!!!
Awesome...... my mum was treated like a queen. The complex an staff were amazing. That is how our elderly SHOULD be looked after. Many rest homes should take a leaf out of their book!!
Wow! So good.
After checking out an utterly awful competitor in a nearby villiage, we came to check out Kumeu Village Rest Home.
What a difference! As you walk up to the entrance, you are reminded of a high class hotel with a drivethrough portico. Even little things like this count as your loved one doesn't have to get wet when coming home from a day out etc.
Then entering the building, you are met with a reception area where you will be greeted by the fantastic receptionist.
This entrance area is amazing, a baby grand piano sits front and centre and the entire space is filled with fantastic art, sculptures etc.
The rest home portion is also amazing with different facades for different rooms. There is so much for the elders to look at, to touch, to keep them interested etc.
While we were there we saw a group of residents all doing some art etc and I stopped to say hi to them. They were all happy and engaged. I was amazed when the manager who was showing us around, excused herself to go and give one old lady a hug and a kiss on the head. She returned and apologised for leaving us and said, "she is another one who just loves cuddles, she's so cute".
We then go and look at the Memory Assist (dementia care) unit. A swipe card gets you in (and a keypad blocks exit).
The dining room is like a nice cafe, you can see into the kitchen and ask the chefs if you would like something extra to eat etc.
The lounge is great, with big comfy chairs, many hundreds of books etc and direct access out to a large grassed courtyard.
The rooms for the elders are massive, with wristband access so wanderers can't get into a room that isn't theirs. Two rooms share a jack and jill style bathroom between them and seperate shower rooms are nearby complete with fluffy monogrammed towels!
Each room has a ranchslider that leads out into the grassed courtyard, where we were able to put some pot plants for Mum to tend and a comfy armchair where she can sit and watch her own tv or look out into the courtyard. Residents can even take their cat or dog with them and you are encouraged to decorate their room as you see fit.
Beds are fully adjustable and have sensor pads in them that can warn the staff if necessary.
Speaking of staff, they are all awesome. Of particular mention would be the manager Amanda who is just a special kind of person and utterly suited to this career. Andreena on reception is amazing but she is also the person who painted many of the incredible artworks on display. 'Sarah the Carer' likewise is an absolute treasure and Gary the head nurse is a fantastic guy.
So we are absolutely thrilled to be able to have Mum at Kumeu Village. She was quite crook when she arrived but is gaining weight and seems to be very happy there. When she had a TIA (minor stroke) one day both my sister and I received phone calls from staff keeping us up to date and reassured.
One thing that I was so pleased to see was what happened while I was visiting one day just days after Mum moved in when one of the elders passed away. Rather than hide the fact that someone had died, almost the entire staff, maybe 20 or 30 people, plus many residents lined up as a guard of honour, to say goodbye, as the coffin was taken out to the hearse. Most of the staff were teary as was I watching on, knowing for sure that my Mum was in a place where the people caring for her, really cared.
I can't recommend Kumeu Village enough. On behalf of Mum (Betty) and my family, thank you.
