Pat and Helen in the Kumeu Courier

Posted 30/6/2016

Pat and our incredibly talented Registered Nurse Helen, have had a story written up about the beautiful oil painting Helen painted of Pat and the War Flag belonging to a Japanese Solider in 1942 that Pat found in a Auckland militaria shop and delivered back to his family in 1992. Such an amazing story of an incredible man!

Anzac Day at Kumeu Village

Posted 2/4/2016

It was a beautiful ANZAC day here at Kumeu Village. We were lucky enough to have Corporal Gil McFarlane and Sergeant Robert Kesley from the Royal New Zealand Air Force take the ceremony and have lunch with our Residents and family members. Eric Cole beautifully played the bugle and our Residents Roy Brown and Joyce Scholz lit the candle and laid the wreath. Therese read the poem 'In Flanders Fields' and we ended our celebration with cake, coffee and lots of homemade ANZAC biscuits. As well as a quick ride in the old war jeeps!

Eden Alternative Registry Congratulations Letter

Posted 11/1/2016

We have just received the below letter from Eden in Oz & NZ congratulating us on achieving our Eden registry.

"Dear Belinda and the amazing Kumeu team.

On behalf of the Eden in Oz & NZ Board of Directors, I would like to congratulate you all in successfully achieving your Initial Principles of 10 & 2 and the Additional Principles of 3,4and 5. You are now a member of the Eden Registry .In meeting the criteria and fulfilling the requirements for a successful Community Visit, your home has successfully demonstrated Wise Leadership in creating and growing a Human Habitat to fight the plagues of Loneliness, Helplessness and Boredom that elders usually suffer in long term settings.

We know you will celebrate the occasion with your team and acknowledge your journey so far. We are so proud of your achievements.

For a home that is so new in the scheme of things, your residents and staff are really empowered to direct their daily lives and contribute in meaningful ways to their living and working environment. Your culture is thriving. … !! The visit highlighted and show cased the many examples of how you are turning the medical model of care and service delivery, on its head.

As a new / member of the Eden Registry it is important that you are aware of the following. Please share this with your Management Team and your Eden Associates, so they can learn and appreciate the benefits and responsibilities of being part of the Eden Registry.

1. You have made a commitment to undertake the Eden Journey as stated in your Strategic Plan and need to continue this commitment, to provide the human and financial resources for your Eden Journey to continue and be sustainable.

2. Your Organizations’ information will now be placed on the Eden in Oz & NZ website so that members of the public can locate your home/ service and see that you belong to a World Wide movement advocating for Culture Change in aged and community care settings across Oz & NZ, and that you are driving change and doing things differently to other aged and community care communities. You have achieved this status by dedicated hard work and incredible effort and passion, from all staff. You have invested financially in your organizations commitment to sustained culture change.

3. Other homes and services that have commenced the Eden Journey can now seek you out and share your experiences of culture change and making change sustainable within your organization. Expect local and international community groups and individuals to seek your advice and visit your home/ service. You now have an opportunity to prepare for many others seeking information about culture change and how to influence them by explaining what the Eden Alternative Philosophy can do to change the way people think.

4. Your home/ service can now use the “official “Eden Alternative logo and brand trademark name, Eden Alternative TM in AND the Registry Member Logo in all your advertising and promotional collateral. This logo is protected by copyright and if you hear or see other homes / services using Eden language or brand or Eden logo, you have a responsibility to inform the Eden Registry Manager immediately.

5. There is an expectation that your home will continue to apply for Additional Principles every 1- 2 years until you achieve all 10 Principles .When all 10 Principles are achieved your home becomes known as a “Master Gardener”. It is expected that you will apply for Re registration after that status is attained in 2 years’ time and in a further 2 years after that. Homes that successfully maintain their Eden Alternative Culture Change then become a member of a very special group of homes/ services that are deemed Life Long Members of the Eden Registry. The Registry Manager will be supporting your home/ service all through this journey.

We hope that your Eden journey continues to be exciting and fulfilling and that your team also remains committed to developing and implementing innovative solutions when there are occasions when ‘frost’ occurs. As you are aware, constantly warming the soil in a healthy and caring environment is a vital component for success in the Eden Alternative.

We look forward to hearing from you about further application for Eden Principles and in sharing some of your information with others. Again, our congratulations on your continuing growth through the Eden Registry process.

Yours sincerely

Cathy Meyer, Registry Manager"

Our First Audits

Posted 28/12/2015

We recently completed out very first Eden Alternative and DHB/Ministry of Health Certification Audit. Both went better than we could have hoped!

Our Eden Alternative Audit was conducted on December 3rd by two Eden community visitors. We applied for 5 of the 10 principles and achieved all 5! These are: Principle 10 - Wise leadership is the lifeblood of any struggle against the three plagues. For it, there can be no substitute, Principle 2 - An Elder-centered community commits to creating a Human Habitat where life revolves around close and continuing contact with plants, animals and children. It is these relationships that provide the young and old alike with a pathway to a life worth living, Principle 3 - Loving companionship is the antidote to loneliness. Elders deserve easy access to human and animal companionship, Principle 4 - An Elder-centered community creates opportunity to give as well as receive care. This is the antidote to helplessness, and Principle 5 - An Elder-centered community imbues daily life with variety and spontaneity by creating an environment in which unexpected and unpredictable interactions and happenings can take place. This is the antidote to boredom.

We would like to congratulate everyone who is a part of Kumeu Village as we have achieved something really amazing together and we all should be very proud!

Our 2 day DHB/Ministry of Health Certification Audit went extremely well too. Some of the comments we received were:

“Achievement beyond the expected full attainment for the planned and spontaneous activities facilitated to develop and maintain strengths, skills and interests that are meaningful to the elders/residents in the home.”

“A resident’s individual food, fluid and nutritional needs are met and provided in line with recognized nutritional guidelines appropriate to the consumer group.”

“The physical environment minimizes risk of harm, promotes safe mobility, aids independence and is appropriate to the needs of the residents.”

All of these were achieved with CIs (Continuous Improvements) which means that we exceeded the standard.

Thank you everyone for a wonderful first year and congratulations for these wonderful results!
